What will the development be providing for the town?

Northgate Yard is a leisure destination for entertainment with a new state of the art 7-screen Cinema from WTW Scotts Cinemas, an 8-lane bowling alley and sports bar from Allstars, four ground floor restaurants, car parking, and an outside landscaped town centre park (Brewery Field).

Why is the council investing money into this development?

Northgate Yard is a regeneration project for Bridgwater town centre creating an entertainment destination for families following a public consultation. This project is also aligning with Sedgemoor District Council’s economy recovery plans and will add to the excitement and success of the town centre.

Where has the funding come from for this project?

This is a long-standing regeneration project, based on land owned by Sedgemoor District Council. In all, the Council is investing around £16m into the project. Funding will come from a variety of sources including central Government via accelerator funding to kickstart work at the Northgate site – of which £150,000 was earmarked for improvements to Brewery Field.

When will work start?

Work on site is now well underway.

What is happening to Brewery Field?

Under the new designs, new and improved play facilities will be created at the south-eastern corner of the site, near both the school and the neighbouring Blake car park.

An improved pedestrian and cycle path will be built at the eastern border of the field, forming part of the town’s Celebration Mile and a meandering path created through the centre of the field, following the course of the former railway line into the town centre.

There will be extensive new tree and shrubs planted and open grass areas sown with wildflowers to encourage a diverse range of wildlife. There will be a swale and pond area that will collect water and add to the visual interest and amenity as well as providing ecological and biodiversity improvements.

Are you going to cordon off Brewery Field?

Yes – Brewery Field will have to be cordoned off from public access for at least 12 months. The entire Northgate Yard and Brewery Field regeneration project is expected to be completed in October 2022.  The cycle/foot path through the field will generally remain open but with occasional closure to undertake certain work.

How long will construction take?

Building work is well underway and is estimated to be completed by Summer 2022 with operator fit out works then taking over with target opening dates in Autumn 2022.

When will the cinema and bowling open?

WTW Scotts Cinema and AllStars Bowl are both scheduled to open in Autumn 2022.

Will any roads be closed during construction?

No, any works to the highway can be undertaken without significant disruption and controlled with temporary traffic lights.

Which restaurants will be opening?

We are currently marketing for occupiers for the restaurant units.  We will release the names of the restaurants opening when there is news over the next 12 months.

Will you offer the restaurant spaces to local businesses first?

We are really keen to hear from any local businesses interested in the restaurant space and hope to be able to support businesses from the region.

Will there be enough car parking for Northgate Yard visitors and residents of the local area?

As well as a 115 space car park being built with the new Northgate Yard development, there is parking at Northgate Car Park, near the job centre (163 spaces), Angel Place Shopping Centre (377 spaces) and Market Street Car Park (29 spaces), Blake (66 spaces).

How can I keep up to date with the progress of the build?

Site contractors, Willmott Dixon are producing regular newsletter with updates for residents and businesses and Sedgemoor District Council will also be regularly updating their website and issuing press releases. If you want to physically see how building is progressing, there are sections in the site perimeter hoardings where you can look through.
